To kick off a discussion on Earth Day in my classroom, we read “The Earth Book” by Todd Parr…
This book is super simple and does a wonderful job illustrating ten simple ways the children can help take care of the earth….
At the end of the book is a poster that you can review with the children and even take it out of the book to hang up on your wall…
As a follow up to “The Earth Book,” one of the activities we did was to make a beautiful earth similar to the one seen on the cover of the book. To make an earth, the children started by creating lines and dots of green (for land) and blue (for water) on a paper plate…
Then the children flipped the paper plate over on a large piece of white art paper and pressed it flatly against the paper…
And the children used one hand to “spin the earth” around in a circle while using the other hand to keep the paper from moving as they spinned the paper plate. This is the same technique as “The Paper Plate Spin-Art” I have previously shared…
And then the children lifted the paper plate up from the paper to reveal their beautiful blue and green earth prints…
In the end, each child had two pieces of artwork to take home. The earth on their paper and the paper plate earth too! This is the kind of process that the children like to try more than once so you might want to have extra paper and paper plates on hand…
